The variable mistakes that cause most rejections
Variables are the numbered blanks, like {{1}}, that get filled in for each customer. Meta’s review checks them strictly, and these are the rules it lists.
The message starts or ends with a variable
Meta calls these dangling parameters and does not allow them. Put words on both sides.
Rejected: {{1}}, your appointment is confirmed for {{2}}
Better: Hello {{1}}, your appointment is confirmed for {{2}}. Reply here if you need to change it.
Variables are out of order or skip a number
They must run in sequence. Meta’s own example of a failure is {{1}}, {{2}}, {{5}}, {{4}}.
Rejected: Hi {{1}}, your order {{3}} ships on {{2}}.
Better: Hi {{1}}, your order {{2}} ships on {{3}}.
Too many variables for the length of the message
A message that is mostly blanks looks like it could say anything, so Meta asks you to use fewer variables or write more words around them.
Rejected: Hi {{1}}, {{2}} {{3}} on {{4}} at {{5}}.
Better: Hi {{1}}, your {{2}} is booked for {{3}} at {{4}}. Please arrive ten minutes early.
Broken or special characters in the variable
Missing or mismatched curly braces fail, and so do characters such as #, $ or % inside a variable. Write {{1}} exactly. {{#order}}, {1} and {{ 1 } will not pass.
Content that Meta won’t approve
| Problem | Example | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Asks for sensitive identifiers | Asking for a full card number, bank account number or national ID | Ask for a partial identifier, which Meta allows, or send people to your secure site. |
| Threatening or abusive wording | “Pay by Friday or we will take legal action and tell your employer.” | State the amount and date plainly. Meta names threats of legal action and public shaming. |
| Goods Meta restricts | Promoting products barred by the WhatsApp Commerce Policy, such as alcohol, tobacco or weapons | Check the policy first. Rewording will not get a barred product approved. |
| Copy of an existing template | Same body and footer as another template in your account | Use the existing template, or change the wording. Authentication templates are exempt. |
| Over the length limit | A long body, or too many emoji | Shorten it. The limits depend on the template’s format and tag. |
Check the category too
Marketing and utility templates are charged very differently: about ₹0.8631 against about ₹0.115 per delivered message in India. So keep each template to one job. An order update should only update the order. Add “20% off your next order” and it reads as promotion, not as a service message. Write offers as separate marketing templates, and see what each message type covers.
What to do after a rejection
- Read the reason in WhatsApp Manager, or in your WhatsApp platform if it syncs template status.
- Edit and resubmit if the reason is clear. Meta says a decision can take up to 24 hours.
- Appeal if you believe the template follows the rules. Appeals must include a sample, and Meta says it decides within 24 hours.
- Add realistic sample values when you submit, so a reviewer can see what the customer will actually read.
Approved isn’t the end of it
Meta keeps rating a template after approval, based on customer feedback, usage and engagement. One that reaches the lowest rating is paused for 3 hours the first time, 6 hours the second, and disabled the third. If that is happening to you, read how to recover a low-quality WhatsApp number.
How WapTalk helps
WapTalk’s template editor shows the message as the customer will see it, next to a checklist of these rules: variables in order and used once, none at the start or end, plain headers and valid buttons. You submit to Meta from the same screen and see any rejection reason there. The checks catch common mistakes, but Meta makes the final decision.
